About the route
Etihad Rail Passenger Services is a joint venture between Etihad Rail, the UAE's national rail operator, and Keolis, a French transport operator with rail and metro contracts across the Middle East and Europe. It began passenger operations on the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah trip in June 2026, and extended to Dubai on 30 September 2026, linking the two cities directly by rail for the first time.
Passenger and freight trains share the same rail network — Etihad Rail's freight trains have run since 2023, moving cargo such as granulated sulphur and aggregate between the country's ports and industrial centres — but operations are scheduled separately, so a freight train on the line doesn't affect passenger travel times.
Etihad Rail aims to reduce road congestion, cut carbon emissions and connect the UAE's population, industry and tourism centres through one integrated national rail network — with the Dubai–Abu Dhabi trip as its first major passenger milestone.
The route
Neither station sits in the two cities' downtown cores, so build a few extra minutes into your journey for the metro, bus or taxi connection at each end.
| Station | City | Key connections |
|---|---|---|
| Jumeirah Golf Estates | Dubai | Dubai Metro (footbridge, ~4 min), buses, taxis, Al Maktoum International Airport (~30 min) |
| Mohamed bin Zayed City | Abu Dhabi | Metro, buses, taxis, onward access toward Zayed International Airport |
The bigger picture
Etihad Rail is one of the region's most strategic national projects — a 1,200 km rail network linking major population centres, industrial zones and trade hubs, including Jebel Ali Port and the northern emirates. It supports the UAE Vision for economic diversification and national development, reducing road dependency with modern, technology-driven infrastructure.
