About the route

## What Is the Etihad Rail Train Between Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Etihad Rail Passenger Services is a joint venture between Etihad Rail, the UAE's national rail operator, and Keolis, a French transport operator with rail and metro contracts across the Middle East and Europe. It began passenger operations on the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah trip in June 2026, and extended to Dubai on 30 September 2026, linking the two cities directly by rail for the first time.

Passenger and freight trains share the same rail network — Etihad Rail's freight trains have run since 2023, moving cargo such as granulated sulphur and aggregate between the country's ports and industrial centres — but operations are scheduled separately, so a freight train on the line doesn't affect passenger travel times.

> Etihad Rail aims to reduce road congestion, cut carbon emissions and connect the UAE's population, industry and tourism centres through one integrated national rail network — with the Dubai–Abu Dhabi trip as its first major passenger milestone.

## Etihad Rail's Rail Network Across the Middle East

Etihad Rail is one of the region's most strategic national projects — a 1,200 km rail network linking major population centres, industrial zones and trade hubs, including Jebel Ali Port and the northern emirates. It supports the UAE Vision for economic diversification and national development, reducing road dependency with modern, technology-driven infrastructure.

Destinations| Opening
---|---
Abu Dhabi, Fujairah| 30 June 2026 — open now
Dubai (Jumeirah Golf Estates), Sharjah (Al Dhaid)| 30 September 2026 — open now

Sharjah already has one open station — Al Dhaid, live since 30 September 2026 — with a second, University City Station, still to come in March 2027. The Al Dhafra region opens in two stages: Liwa and Madinat Zayed on 30 November 2026, then Al Mirfa, Al Dhannah and Al Sila on 30 December 2026. Once complete, the network is projected to carry around 36.5 million passengers a year across all 11 cities and regions, with Al Ain and Ras Al Khaimah planned to eventually put most of the UAE's major cities within reach of a single ticket.

  * No need to watch the road — a genuinely stress-free way to commute between the two cities

### Etihad Rail's Environmental Impact

  * Rail transport emits 70–80% less CO2 than trucks carrying the same tonnage by road
  * One freight train trip replaces around 300 trucks on the road
  * The network is projected to cut emissions by over 2.2 million tonnes a year
